Prominent Examples

Several casualties in confinement have been widely reported, such as a middle-aged hospital director who lost his life in detention after 120 days in detention.

A detainee detained alongside the victim stated that he was led to the yard by guards shortly before his demise, obviously hurt and naked from the waist down. His corpse has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Other prisoners who lost their lives in confinement by Israeli authorities are unidentified. Correctional authorities and military gave investigators with the number of fatalities in custody, and basic additional information including the site where they perished, but excluding the inmates’ personal details.

Recognition Difficulties

Regarding 21 occurrences, primarily individuals from Gaza, analysts could not to connect the few details given by government bodies to a fatality documented by human rights groups, either through statements from freed prisoners or coverage in the news outlets.

The inmates’ next of kin could be unaware about their relatives’ casualties also, as Israel has made it difficult to track Palestinian individuals it is detaining.
