The Life Cycle of a Movement tends to be marked by distinct phases.

1. The Core Concept

A charismatic leader or figureheads present a revolutionary approach offering a solution for disconnected individuals.

So here we are. They’re getting ready to confront the system down in Brisbane. Tensions are rising. Signs of trouble appear from the sidelines. An isolated player, naked, anxious, the phrase ATTACKING MINDSET written on his body as a statement, has stumbled through the lines and is being led away in secrecy to a different team elsewhere.

Remember the early days, when everything was fresh? The initial phase, of pure instinct.

2. Initial Adoration

Team architects offer a fresh beginning, a brighter tomorrow, love, salvation within a community with shared faith in the big idea.

What was this thing back then? Players celebrating enjoying success. Tattoos. Forearms. Jawlines. Confident masculinity. Admittedly, The team will claim they don’t use the label, ironically as it’s denied, what did we see?

But we know the concept. It’s Harry Brook attempting a move so depraved it has to be pixelated. It’s the thrill of the captain at his peak, a look that says: thoughtful warrior, beard made of wood, hair woven from beaver hide, genuinely raw you almost imagine to look down and see him playing on the ground stripped to the waist and cradling a wild salmon.

It’s the batsman often seen to talk in press conferences, out there looking like a joyful figure smartly dressed, saying stuff like we’re breaking down traditions. Indeed, the energy, initially, was only good energy.

3. The Growth Phase

Building period. Unity enforced through repetition of key phrases. These principles can appear contradictory as a loyalty check.

Is it just me? The criticism, the outrage, the disappointment post-defeat appears excessive, unwarranted. England batted badly in Perth, as history shows. They were dominated in the field for a couple of hours when tactics failed, manipulated by the batsman imitating their style effectively, responsive to the situation, a performer excelling with aura.

And now we have this the pile-on, the rage, the perception of the team as a disgrace. The consensus is that losing isn’t enough, they need to lose righteously, to be purged, obliterated, destroyed through sheer skill of the pace attack, the conventional tactics of the bowler, marking successes modestly similar to getting a nice new fishing rod. What will this do to them?

4. External Conflict

Issues emerge due to setbacks. However, faults are ignored. It begins to thrive on hostility externally.

Ultimately, half a week out the next match, we’ve entered a delicious point of tension in the story of this approach. Victory is possible in Brisbane through aggressive play. More likely, failure may follow. In case of defeat it appears we may see the final stage.

Ahead of this, there are two things worth saying regarding this. More than two years ago, at the start, of optimism and energy, I wrote an article calling it a phenomenon. Meanwhile, there is the broader context of the host’s complex more culturally hard-wired exasperation at these weirdly passive-aggressive buccaneers, claiming, the methods you value and have developed as one way of separating yourself from others, it’s not serious ultimately.

And this is the real point. All movements are similar. The style was a trend as the game has its own culture. Or at least, the sport in England is closed, a group, a garden party, an insular community with centuries of opaque and ritualistic cult history defining it. Historically, this was where influence is guarded. It’s the British pastime of the nation, the pioneering brand. And notably, the nation has its own culture, a system of unknown levels, a place that literally still has a king.

The team have been isolated within this world for years. Seeking change, to foster positivity, they are just repeating their past, building another enclosure, an exclusive group, but doing it this time with a new team and a coach promoting authenticity as long as yourself is quite a lot like myself.

Live where your feet are. Confront risks. Despite efforts, you’re always basically in the same place.
